Overview

The Sustainable Tourism Explorer is powered by JSON files – JavaScript Object Notation – to serve data in a powerful, flexible structure. You can use the data in your own analyses and projects by downloading the JSON files you need. You can also copy the permanent link to the JSON so that your projects are updated immediately when new data is available.

Each JSON at the highest level is an array of two elements. The first element contains metadata such as the data's name, origin, license and date last updated. The second element contains the data, which are typically organised into objects (enclosed in {} curly braces) for each time period. Some structural variation may occur to represent more complex data. For example, electronic card transaction origin data consists of an array of 12 arrays representing each year-ending month, each of which contain an object for each time period.

We recommend using the jsonlite package for R projects and the built-in json package for Python projects. Excel and Power BI users can use Power Query with a JSON as a data source. Tableau allows users to connect to JSON Files.

If you prefer to use CSV files instead, you can download the data directly from each chart. Click on the button Download icon, black arrow pointing down to a black rectangle. you find at the top-right-corner of each chart, then click on Data and CSV.
