About us
Who we are
MBIE developed the Tourism Evidence and Insights Centre (TEIC) in collaboration with the tourism industry, academia, and government partners. Our purpose is to provide accessible, reliable, and actionable tourism data to support understanding, decision‑making, and long‑term sector wellbeing.
The TEIC was established in response to insights from the 2018 Tourism Data Domain Plan and the 2019 Tourism Information and Data Hui. These efforts identified key goals:
- A system that actively supports collaboration across the sector
- Improved data usability, accessibility, and clarity
- A digital platform for sharing insights and resources
- The development of sustainability indicators and tools to monitor tourism impacts
What this site offers
The TEIC website brings together data, insights, tools, and sector contributions in one place. It is designed to make tourism information easier to find, understand, and use—whether you are exploring trends, producing research, or making operational or policy decisions.
The site continues the sector’s call for shared evidence and collaboration, offering access to analytical tools and resources developed with input from regional, national, and academic partners.
Sustainable Tourism Explorer (STE)
A central feature of the TEIC is the Sustainable Tourism Explorer (STE), an interactive tool for exploring environmental, social, and economic indicators of tourism sustainability.
Users can explore historical trends, customise and download visualisations, and navigate a broad suite of sustainability measures built in partnership with the tourism sector.
We welcome your contributions! You can contribute tourism‑related articles or presentations by contacting the team.
Tourism Insights Users Group (TIUG)
Another outcome of the 2019 Tourism Information and Data Hui was the creation of the Tourism Insights Users Group (TIUG). The TIUG holds a quarterly hui that brings together practitioners, researchers, regional tourism organisations, central government agencies, and industry bodies.
TIUG hui feature:
- Updates on major tourism datasets, research, and analytical tools
- Presentations from across the tourism sector
- Space for discussion, questions, and emerging insights
- A regular forum for cross‑sector collaboration
